PSC Dean Kim Marisa Kunce Appointed to Adult Education and Family Literacy Advisory Council [10/29/13]
Kim Marisa Kunce, dean of adult education at Prairie State College (PSC), recently was appointed to serve a two-year term on the Illinois Community College Board (ICCB) Adult Education and Family Literacy (AEFL) Advisory Council.
During the first year of her term, Kunce will serve on the Curriculum and Instruction Committee. The committee is tasked with determining the challenges of incorporating English as a Second Language, Adult Basic Education, and Adult Secondary Education standards into curriculum and instruction; determining what is required to ensure teachers are implementing standards into instruction; and examining the development of the master teachers or content specialist in adult education programs.
The committee also will address how their recommendations might influence what happens in the classroom and in the area of instruction, how the recommendations might influence course development, what additional professional development activities are needed as a result of the recommendations, and what policy changes need to be instituted to implement the recommendations.
“The ICCB Adult Education and Family Literacy program has updated its Content Standards in order to align with the Common Core Standards recently established,” said Kunce. “By doing so, programs in the state will better prepare students to not only pass the new GED Test 2014, but prepare them for the rigors of college and career readiness programs at the postsecondary level,” she added.
The AEFL Advisory Council consists of all categories of eligible providers and agency partners, including the State Board of Education, the Department of Human Services, and the Illinois Department of Employment Security, the Secretary of State Literacy program, as well as other stakeholders. The council identifies, deliberates, and makes recommendations to the State Board on adult education policy and priorities.
