of the Year and Annual Student Exhibition at PSC. The exhibit is open through Sept.
The Christopher Art Gallery at Prairie State College (PSC) is hosting the 2017 Photographer of the Year and Annual Student Exhibition through Thursday, Sept. 14, in the gallery, located on the PSC main campus at 202 S. Halsted St. in Chicago Heights.
Featured during the exhibit will be the work of the 2017 Photographer of the Year, PSC student Jessica Heing of Matteson.
Her works of interiors, taken at the famous Thorne Rooms of the Art Institute of Chicago, convey different moods, allowing observers to feel immersed in the environment depicted.
“When I look through my lens I want to always capture something that I want everyone else to see and think…‘I never looked at that from this perspective’,” says Heing.
Two of her works, Child’s Play and Virginia Kitchen, particularly focus on things, rather than a whole interior, giving the work an immediacy, as if someone just missed the action. The shallow depth of field allows for concentrated focus.
“Heing’s attention to detail, her choice of focus, and her use of scale all impart her intention with each interior,” said Christopher Art Gallery Director, Beth Shadar. “She uses all the formal aspects of photography to lead us as viewers towards our own response to the personality of each work.”
The Photographer of the Year award is given annually to an outstanding PSC photography student. Heing was chosen through a portfolio competition. In addition to being the featured artist in the student show, Heing also will receive a $1,500 scholarship.
The annual student exhibition also will include works from various classes during the 2016-2017 academic year, and have been chosen by the fine art faculty members. Works include photographs, paintings, drawings and three dimensional works.
The Christopher Art Gallery is open from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m., Monday through Thursday, and 5 to 7 p.m. on Wednesday and Thursday. The gallery will be closed on Monday, Sept. 4, in recognition of Labor Day. Visits also can be made by appointment.
