Program Description:

Canterbury Christ Church University (CCCU), a growing institution with 14,000 students, is located near the medieval city wall and a few blocks away from the well-known Canterbury Cathedral. While being surrounded by lovely English countryside, Canterbury still has easy access to London.

This program offers both a strong academic component and extensive cultural immersion. The immersion can take many forms which includes:

  • Numerous field trips
  • In-home stays
  • Classes with British students

ICISP students have full access to all CCCU facilities This includes co- and extracurricular activities, as well as the services of the CCCU International Office.

An ICISP faculty will also be on-site to assist with personal or academic issues. This faculty member will be available to ICISP student participants throughout the entire semester of study abroad.

Program Credits:

The student will receive up to 12 transferable college credits in the semester programs.
Required classes:

  • British Politics and Society (3)
  • Survey of British Literature OR Survey of British History (3)

These required classes are structured of American students and provide a safe environment in which the students can learn about Britain.

The students will then choose two additional courses with British students. This choice is made from an approved selection of classes primarily composed of humanities and social science courses.

Program Requirements:

This program is open to serious students, teachers, and individuals who have a strong interest in immersing themselves in British culture and history.

All students are required to register for credit and participate in all classroom and program activities. All students will be required to have:

  • 2.75 or higher GPA, based on 12 or more credits of college study
  • Two faculty recommendations
  • English Composition I completed with a grade of C or better
  • Physician's approval to travel

 Pre-Trip Orientation:

The required pre-trip orientation will be held at Heartland Community College in Bloomington-Normal prior to departure. Students should contact their ICISP representative further information on exact dates.

Program Fee:

The program fee is: $6,950 (subject to change).
The fee will cover:

  • Instructional costs
  • Homestay
  • Breakfast provided daily
  • Course-related field trips
  • HealthSelect Overseas Platinum insurance through HTH Worldwide

This fee does not cover:

  • Airfare
  • Passport
  • Noon and evening meals
  • Books
  • Refundable Library Deposit (campus & town)
  • Personal expenses
  • Tuition at home institution

Flight Details:

The necessary information will be given to the students in order forthem to schedule their individual flights into England. Group transportation will be arranged to get students from London to Canterbury.

Passport/Visa:

All participants will need to have or acquire a current passport before the date of departure (applicants should allow eight (8) weeks for standard passport processing).

Lodging and Meals:

Students will live with British families in home-stay settings.  The home-stay provides students with wonderful opportunities to gain firsthand experience with British culture, as they will be interacting with a British family on a daily basis.

The International Office at CCCU has screened local families carefully to provide ICISP students with a safe, secure introduction to everyday British life.  Many of the families have hosted students for years and have become veteran guides to life in Canterbury.

Breakfast will be provided for the student by the home-stay family. There will be kitchen access for the rest of the meals. There is also a cafeteria on campus from which the students are able to purchase food.
