SLOAN MAKES HISTORY AS PIONEERS’ SEASON COMES TO A CLOSE
BYRON, Ill. --- Prairie State College freshman golfer Bobby Sloan (Mount Carmel H.S.) turned in another stellar outing this past weekend at the NJCAA Region IV Tournament at PrairieView Golf Course.

Sloan led the Pioneers, who finished ninth in the team standings, with a three-day total of 235, shooting rounds of 75, 75 and 85.

The PSC freshman also placed among the top-five individuals who were not on a qualifying team, thus qualifying himself for the NJCAA National Tournament May 21-25 at Indiana National Golf Course in Swan Lake, Ind.

“Coming into this season, I definitely thought that Bobby was capable of qualifying for nationals,” PSC coach Jeff Zurawicz said. “I knew if he played as well as he had throughout the entire season, his going to nationals would be a done deal.

“Bobby worked extremely hard this season and he really was a tremendous asset to our team.”

Sloan became PSC’s first national-qualifier since Brandon Boren (Bloom H.S.) in the fall of 2003.

In addition to Sloan, PSC also picked up a solid effort from sophomore Landon Lukasik (Homewood-Flossmoor H.S.). Lukasik delivered a three-day total of 248 (80, 82, 86).

Sophomore Kevin Sloan (Homewood-Flossmoor H.S.) (258), sophomore Jim Fransen (Marist H.S.), (269) and freshman Paul Schultz (Homewood-Flossmoor H.S.), (284) rounded out the Pioneers’ competititors.

LUKASIK, PIONEERS LOCK DOWN FIRST WIN OF SEASON
NORTHBROOK, Ill. --- The progress that the Prairie State College golf team has made throughout the course of the 2011 season has been both steady and palpable.

There was no greater sign of this than Wednesday afternoon when the Pioneers reeled off their first, first-place finish of the season, confidently claiming the top spot in an Illinois Skyway Collegiate Conference match at Mission Hills Golf Course.

Prairie State compiled a team score of 305, narrowly edging out runner-up Moraine Valley, who shot a 308.

“The team is excited about what they accomplished,” PSC head coach Jeff Zurawicz said. “We aren’t satisfied though and we know we have a lot more work to take care of.

“Today was the first time we had all four of our guys shoot in the 70’s. We also have an outside shot at winning conference now too.”

PSC was led by a standout performance from sophomore Landon Lukasik (Homewood-Flossmoor H.S.). Lukasik turned in a career day, earning medalist honors with a round of 73. He opened the match with a 41-stroke effort on the front nine before closing with a blistering 32.

“Landon has a lot of potential,” Zurawicz said. “He had a nine-stroke differential in his nine’s and that was tremendous and a pretty impressive feat.”

Two strokes behind Lukasik was freshman Bobby Sloan (Mount Carmel H.S.) who carded a 75.

Sophomore Jim Fransen (Marist H.S.), (score of 78) and sophomore Kevin Holtz (Homewood-Flossmoor H.S.), (79) rounded out the Pioneers’ scorers.

PIONEERS TAKE ADVANTAGE OF FAMILIAR TERRITORY
UNIVERSITY PARK, Ill. --- Prairie State College freshman Bobby Sloan (Mount Carmel H.S.) keeps getting better every time he strides to the first tee.

The Pioneers are certainly glad that this is the case, especially after Sloan's career-best round of 70 on Monday tied him for medalist honors, and more importantly, helped tow PSC to a third-place finish in an Illinois Skyway Collegiate Conference match at Deer Creek Golf Club.

Prairie State's score of 307 was a stroke behind runner-up Moraine Valley (306) and two behind winner Waubonsee (305).

Lake County (312), Elgin (326) and Oakton (328) rounded out the remainder of the field.

Prairie State head coach Jeff Zurawicz was more than pleased with his team's effort.

"To see the group perform well as a whole was special to see," Zurawicz said. "However, we still have room for improvement and that's the exciting part. Our motto is "Always Get Better."

Sloan fired off a 35 on both the front and back nine of the Pioneers' home course, once again showing the consistency that has been a staple of his game throughout the young season.

"Bobby has been a leader for us with both his work ethic and of course, his scores," Zurawicz said. " I am looking forward to seeing what he does the rest of the season."

In Sloan's rear-view mirror, just five strokes off the pace, was sophomore Kevin Holtz (Homewood-Flossmoor H.S.). Holtz carded a round of 75, shooting a 38 on the front before closing with a 37.

"Kevin has improved exponentially from last year," Zurawicz said. "He has been very steady this year and bigger and better things await him."

Sophomore Landon Lukasik (Homewood-Flossmoor H.S.), (score of 79), freshman Paul Schultz (Homewood-Flossmoor H.S.), (83) and sophomore Jim Fransen (Marist H.S.), (87) completed the Pioneers' team scorering.

Freshman Tim Schlaudraff (Beecher H.S.), (90) and sophomore Nick Yuris (Bremen H.S.), (109) competed as independents.
