Non-Credit Courses and Programs

Civic Leadership Academy

The Civic Leadership Academy (CLA) was created in 2004 by the Center for Governmental Studies (CGS) at Northern Illinois University as a leadership skills development program for elected and appointed leaders and managers in government and nonprofit agencies. The Academy’s seminars allow for in-person interactions with fellow participants and instructors using experiential learning techniques. Participants may take individual workshops or complete a series of courses towards earning a variety of leadership certificates. Workshops are offered at various locations in the Chicagoland area and Prairie State College has served as a meeting site. For a list of workshop dates and locations visit
