What Can You Do with a Degree in Computer Science-Technical Emphasis?

With a Computer Science-Technical Emphasis A.A., you can enter the workforce in entry-level roles such as IT support, programming, or network administration, or continue your education by transferring to a four-year college or university to pursue a bachelor’s degree in computer science, information technology, or related fields, while developing essential skills in coding, troubleshooting, and system management to contribute to software development, network management, or technical support teams within various organizations.
The demand for computer science professionals continues to grow as technology becomes essential across nearly every industry, with the Bureau of Labor Statistics projecting a 15% increase in employment in computer and information technology fields from 2021 to 2031—much faster than the average for all occupations—allowing graduates with an associate degree in computer science with a technical focus to pursue careers such as software developer, network technician, systems support specialist, web developer, IT support specialist, or computer technician.

Suggested Curriculum

The Computer Science-Technical Emphasis curriculum focuses on algorithms, the theoretical foundations of computer science, and software development, requiring a strong background in mathematics and science, and prepares graduates to work in software, engineering, scientific, or mathematical companies; many universities offer related programs within departments such as Computer Science, Mathematics and Computer Science, or Engineering, with some schools not requiring all listed courses, which include general education core courses in communication, humanities, mathematics, physical and life sciences, and social sciences, as well as a concentration in programming languages like C++ or Java, and electives that can be chosen from approved transfer courses or university-specific options.

Area A: Communication (9 credits)


  • ENG 101 Composition I (C1 900) - with a grade of C or better
  • ENG 102 Composition II (C1 901R) - with a grade of C or better
  • COMM 101 Principles of Communication (C2 900)

Area B: Humanities and Fine Arts (9 credits)


Select three courses from the list for Area B with at least one course selected from humanities and one from fine arts.

Area C: Mathematics (3 credits)


  • MATH 171 Calculus with Analytic Geometry I (M1 900-1; MTH 901)
  • MATH 157 Calculus for Business and Social Science (M1 900-B)
  • MATH 155 Finite Mathematics (M1 906)
  • MATH 210 Discrete Mathematics (M1 905; CS 915)

Consult the universities you are considering, since different schools have different requirements.

Area D: Physical and Life Sciences (7-8 credits)


PHYSI 210 University Physics I (P2 900L; PHY 911)
Select one Life Science from the list for Area D.

Area E: Social and Behavioral Sciences (9 credits)


Select three courses in at least two different disciplines from the list for Area E including:

  • ECON 201 Macroeconomic Principles (S3 901)
  • ECON 202 Microeconomic Principles (S3 902)

* It is strongly recommended (and may be required at some senior institutions) that both programming courses are in the same language and be taken at the same school before transfer. Consult the senior institution that you are considering, since different schools have different requirements. Students will need to demonstrate mastery of the language used by that institution.

  • ITPRG 144 C++ Programming I (CS 911) and
  • ITPRG 244 C++ Programming II (CS 912)
    or
  • ITPRG 147 Java Programming I (CS 911) and
  • ITPRG 247 Java Programming II (CS 912)
