The Americans and the Holocaust Initiative, a groundbreaking ten-year project of the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum, is anchored in a special exhibition that opened to the public in April 2018 in conjunction with the Museum’s 25th anniversary. This exhibition raises challenging and important questions about this critical moment in American history. The introduction to the traveling exhibition reads: What did Americans know? What more could have been done?

Mon, Mar 27, 2023 12:30 PM - 1:30 PM @ Prairie State College
This event is part of the Library's Americans and the Holocaust Exhibition event series. Bruce Mainzer, Speaker Fleeing the Nazis: A Journey of Two Sisters Recently, Bruce Mainzer decided to better organize the affairs of his 103 year old mother who had Alzheimer's. He first looked into a bank safety deposit box which revealed new details about his mother's escape from Nazi occupied Prague in 1939. Despite his mother's inability to recall any details of her harrowing trip, Bruce was able to connect the clues from the documents from the safety deposit box with stories from his own family members and information of newly discovered relatives in Israel and the US of the hero who impersonated an embassy employee to fool the Nazis. Bruce's mother and aunt were the first Jews to try out the forged document scheme and they successfully made it to Paris and then the US. Upon hearing of the two sisters' successful escape, the hero then used the same methods to eventually obtain passage for hundreds of other Jews to escape Prague and flee to British occupied Palestine. |

The Americans and the Holocaust Initiative, a groundbreaking ten-year project of the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum, is anchored in a special exhibition that opened to the public in April 2018 in conjunction with the Museum’s 25th anniversary. This initiative stems from a mandate in the Museum’s founding documents to reflect on “the American aspects of the Holocaust.” By examining this topic, the Museum poses challenging questions that encourage people to think critically about the past, as well as our role in responding to threats of genocide today. This exhibition raises challenging and important questions about this critical moment in American history. The introduction to the traveling exhibition reads: What did Americans know? What more could have been done?

This spring PSC has the honor of hosting a traveling exhibition, Americans and the Holocaust. This traveling exhibition was a creation of the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum and the American Library Association. As such, it is traveling to libraries across the United States. Only two libraries in Illinois have been chosen to host, of which PSC is one. PSC will be hosting from March 17 to April 28th, which includes Passover. In parallel with the Americans and the Holocaust traveling exhibition, the Jewish Community Centers of Chicago (JCC Chicago) is presenting Violins of Hope on the PSC campus. Join us on Monday, April 17, 2023, from 7 pm - 9 pm in the Barnes & Noble College Auditorium for a concert featuring this collection of instruments with history wrapped up in the Holocaust. Many of them were played in concentration camps. We are hosting a concert on these instruments with local musicians from the Chicago Youth Symphony Orchestra, Illinois Philharmonic Orchestra, and the South Suburban College Orchestra. Hear music by Jewish composers, music composed in the camps, and music of resistance played on these instruments in a Concert of Hope. If you are interested in learning more about the visit of Violins of Hope to Chicagoland, please view JCC Chicago’s website. |
