Dialogues On Diversity - HELLFIGHTER
Tue, Feb 14, 2023 2:30 PM @ PSC Conference Center
|
America's complicated history may be hard for some to look at, but without understanding how that history played out for everyday Americans, it's impossible to heal in the here and now. This is a story of deep institutional and systemic bias that people of color had to deal with. Hellfighter is an American story of 5 generations through the real life story of Needham Roberts. Hellfighter weaves a fictionalized story of his son and grandson's journey to the town of Needham, Massachussetts.. It tells the story of one of the country's most decorated military regiments commonly referred to as the "Harlem Hellfighters." This platform has been designed in the hopes to help individuals and organizations address issues of cultural differences in a more open, healthy and respectful way. The Executive Director, Ron Jones is an Emmy Award winner, and has been an educator, writer, actor and social activist for over 25 years. Dialogues in Diversity is one of the nation's premier social justice, diversity awareness theater company. We hope you will join us for this event with a chance to ask questions at the end of the performance/film Valentine's Day treats will be available after the event. This event is sponsored by the Student Government Association and Black Student Union. For more information, please contact Helen Manley at (708)709-3910 or email at hmanley@prairiestate.edu. |

Pre-Civil War Quilts: Secret Codes to Freedom on the Underground Railroad
Thu, Feb 23, 2023 1:00 PM - 2:00 PM @ Prairie State College
|
Join Road Scholar Connie Martin as she tells the stories passed down to her Great Grandmother Lizzie of how her family survived the Anti-bellum period through trials and tribulations, and how they used quilts that contain hidden codes and secret messages to assist abolitionists; white and black, to guide slaves to freedom through the Underground Railroad to Canada. During this presentation, Connie shares eighteen different quilt patterns in replica quilts and refer to a book her mother, Dr. Clarice Boswell, wrote about their family called Lizzie’s Story: A Slave Family’s Journey to Freedom. PROGRAM TOPICS
About the Road Scholar Connie Martin is a retired middle school Language Arts teacher of 32 years, 35-year Aqua Fitness Master Trainer, Senior Fitness Instructor, and mother of three sons. She earned a BA from Illinois State University, and an MA from Aurora University with a Thesis in Integrating African American History in Educational Curriculums. Martin finds joy in telling the secret codes and hidden messages used over 200 years ago by abolitionists and fugitive slaves to signify escape routes to the North—and in the family quilts of her ancestors. Such shows how quilts were used to signal plans, warn of dangers, indicate how transport might occur, or who might help as “Friends” on the Underground Railroad. Connie’s mother, Clarice Boswell, wrote a book, Lizzie’s Story: A Slave Family’s Journey to Freedom, then created and performed this family presentation for 16 years. Her words are the foundation of the presentation, and currently being made into a movie, “Freedom Code.” Connie has been accepted on the Roster of the Illinois Humanities Road Scholar Speakers Bureau 2021-2024.Illinois Humanities is supported in part by the National Endowment for the Humanities (NEH) and the Illinois General Assembly [through the Illinois Arts Council Agency (IACA)], as well as by contributions from individuals, foundations, and corporations. Ethical leadership lecture Lalinda De La Fuente, Sociology professor/Social Sciences Coordinator A lecture presentation based on USHMM exhibits and directed towards high school and/or college students about ethical leadership, centered around the concepts of conformity and rationalization. A common misconception is that only high-ranking Nazi officials were responsible for the Holocaust. This presentation would examine the ordinary people who participated and reveal the widespread failures of individuals, communities, societies, nations, and the international community as a whole. Mon, Mar 27, 2023 12:30 PM - 1:30 PM @ Prairie State College
|
This event is part of the Library's Americans and the Holocaust Exhibition event series. Bruce Mainzer, Speaker Fleeing the Nazis: A Journey of Two Sisters Recently, Bruce Mainzer decided to better organize the affairs of his 103 year old mother who had Alzheimer's. He first looked into a bank safety deposit box which revealed new details about his mother's escape from Nazi occupied Prague in 1939. Despite his mother's inability to recall any details of her harrowing trip, Bruce was able to connect the clues from the documents from the safety deposit box with stories from his own family members and information of newly discovered relatives in Israel and the US of the hero who impersonated an embassy employee to fool the Nazis. Bruce's mother and aunt were the first Jews to try out the forged document scheme and they successfully made it to Paris and then the US. Upon hearing of the two sisters' successful escape, the hero then used the same methods to eventually obtain passage for hundreds of other Jews to escape Prague and flee to British occupied Palestine. |
