What Can You Do with a Degree in English/Literature?
A degree in English/Literature opens doors to a variety of careers such as teaching,
writing, editing, publishing, public relations, marketing, and communications. It
also provides valuable skills in critical thinking, writing, research, and analysis,
which are highly sought after in many industries.
The career outlook for graduates with an English/Literature degree is generally positive,
as these skills are essential across numerous fields. While some careers may require
further education or training, a liberal arts degree offers flexibility and a strong
foundation for diverse job opportunities and continued academic pursuits.
Suggested Curriculum
Students aiming for a bachelor’s degree in English are encouraged to complete an A.A.
or A.S. degree before transferring. Since literature courses involve significant formal
writing, it is recommended that students complete the two-course writing sequence
prior to enrolling in literature classes.
Area A: Communication (9 credits)
- ENG 101 Composition I (C1 900) - with a grade of C or better
- ENG 102 Composition II (C1 901R) - with a grade of C or better
- COMM 101 Principles of Communication (C2 900)
Area B: Humanities and Fine Arts (9 credits)
Select three courses from the list for Area B with at least one course from humanities and one course from fine arts. It is recommended that students satisfy the Humanities and Fine Arts requirement with courses other than the English major recommendations listed below. Students may choose to take other literature courses or any other general education Humanities and Fine Arts course.
Area C: Mathematics (3 credits)
Select one math course from the list for Area C.
Area D: Physical and Life Sciences (7-8 credits)
Select one life science course and one physical science course from the list for Area D. One course must have a lab component.
Area E: Social and Behavioral Sciences (9 credits)
Select three courses in at least two different disciplines from the list for Area E.

- ENG 231 British Literature I (H3 912)
- ENG 232 British Literature II (H3 913)
- ENG 212 American Literature II (H3 915)
Competency in a single Foreign Language through the third or fourth semester of college or three or four years in high school is recommended.
Each college and university has its own major requirements and transfer policies. Consult the schools you are considering and a PSC advisor to discuss courses and their transferability.
