This transfer program is for students pursuing a bachelor’s in various history fields. Prairie State College’s history curriculum provides the foundational courses needed for advanced university work. Students are encouraged to complete the Associate in Arts degree before transferring.
What Can You Do with a Degree in History or Liberal Arts?
At Prairie State College, our History classes cover a wide variety of topics, ranging
from the exploration of various aspects of United States history, to ancient and modern
global events. You can find our current History course offerings in the PSC Catalog

A degree in History or the Liberal Arts opens doors to a wide range of career opportunities.
While History majors have traditionally pursued careers in teaching, museum curation,
journalism, law, and politics, the skills cultivated through historical studies apply
to a broad range of professions in both the public and private sector.
Suggested Curriculum
The critical thinking and writing abilities developed by taking classes in History
are highly sought after in a job market that is increasingly influenced by Artificial
Intelligence. For further insight into careers in History, or the Liberal Arts, we
encourage you to engage with our History faculty about navigating the job market with
a degree in History.
Area A: Communication (9 credits)
- ENG 101 Composition I (C1 900) - with a grade of C or better
- ENG 102 Composition II (C1 901R) - with a grade of C or better
- COMM 101 Principles of Communication (C2 900)
Area B: Humanities and Fine Arts (9 credits)
- Select three courses from the list for Area B with at least one course from humanities and at least one from fine arts.*
Area C: Mathematics (3 credits)
Select one math course from the list for Area C.
Area D: Physical and Life Sciences (7-8 credits)
- Select one life science course and one physical science course from the list for Area D. One course must have a lab component.
Area E: Social and Behavioral Sciences (9 credits)
- Select three courses in at least two different disciplines from the list for Area E.*
- HIST 201 U.S. History: 1492 to 1877 (S2 900)
- HIST 202 U.S. History: 1877 to Present (S2 901)
Select one of the following sequences depending on recommendations at the intended transfer school:
- HIST 111 World History to 1500 (IAI: S2 912N) and
- HIST 112 World History: 1500 to Present (IAI: S2 913 N)
or - HIST 151 History of Western Civilization I (S2 902) and
- HIST 152 History of Western Civilization II (S2 903)
Select additional courses from the list of Courses Approved for Transfer or contact the universities you are considering.
Competency through the fourth semester in college or four years in high school of a single foreign language is required for the B.A. degree in History in some universities, and for all majors in the College of Arts and Sciences at many universities.
*Students are advised to take non-History courses to fulfill the Humanities and Social and Behavior Sciences general education requirements. More specific course choices are required when pursuing History Education. Consult with your advisor.
