The Sociology transfer program prepares students for a bachelor’s in fields like behavioral science and sociology by providing a broad education and foundational coursework. Students are encouraged to complete an Associate in Arts degree before transferring.
What Can You Do with a Degree in Sociology?
Students engage in hands-on learning experiences, applying sociological theories to
real-world scenarios. By examining case studies and conducting research, students
develop critical thinking skills and gain practical insights into the complexities
of human society.
Sociology students gain insight into how individuals and groups are shaped by the
societies they inhabit. Through our courses, students explore the impact of social
structures on behavior, beliefs, and interactions.
Suggested Curriculum
Our curriculum encompasses a broad spectrum of topics, catering to students at all
levels. From introductory surveys that lay the foundation of sociological principles
to in-depth analyses of race relations, gender dynamics, family structures, and identity,
our courses offer a rich and diverse learning experience.
Area A: Communication (9 credits)
- ENG 101 Composition I (C1 900) - with a grade of C or better
- ENG 102 Composition II (C1 901R) - with a grade of C or better
- COMM 101 Principles of Communication (C2 900)
Area B: Humanities and Fine Arts (9 credits)
Select three courses from the list for Area B with at least one course from humanities and one from fine arts.
Area C: Mathematics (3-4 credits)
Select one math course from:
- MATH 115 General Education Statistics (M1 902)
- MATH 153 Probability and Statistics (MI 902)
- MATH 155 Finite Mathematics (M1 906)
Area D: Physical and Life Sciences (7-8 credits)
Select one life science course and one physical science course from the list for Area D. One course must have a lab component.
Area E: Social and Behavioral Sciences (9 credits)
Select three courses in at least two different disciplines from the list for Area E including:
- ANTHR 215 Introduction to Anthropology (IAI: S1 900N) recommended
or - ANTHR 222 Introduction to Cultural and Social Anthropology (IAI: S1 901N) recommended
- SOCIO 101 Introduction to Sociology (S7 900)
Select up to three courses from:
- SOCIO 111 Contemporary Social Issues (S7 901)
- SOCIO 210 Marriage and the Family (S7 902)
- SOCIO 215 Sex, Gender, and Power (S7 904D)
- SOCIO 220 Race Relations: A Multicultural Perspective (S7 903D)
