Prairie State College’s Mathematics A.A. program offers a comprehensive curriculum that develops your analytical and mathematical skills. Designed for students planning to transfer to four-year universities, this program also opens doors to careers in education, finance, technology, and data analysis.
What Can You Do with a Degree in Mathematics?
With this degree, you can transfer to a four-year college or university to pursue
a bachelor’s degree in mathematics, education, engineering, or related fields. It
also provides a foundation for careers in teaching, data analysis, finance, research,
and technology. The program prepares you for a variety of paths that require strong
problem-solving and analytical skills.
Graduates with an Associate in Arts in Mathematics are prepared to transfer to bachelor’s
programs in mathematics, education, engineering, or related fields. Career opportunities
include teaching, data analysis, finance, research, and technical roles. The demand
for strong analytical and quantitative skills continues to grow across industries,
offering a promising outlook for mathematics graduates.
Suggested Curriculum
Students should complete the entire course sequence at one school. Bachelor’s in mathematics
develop critical thinking, understanding of complex structures, and abstract concepts.
Earning an Associate degree before transfer is recommended, but it doesn’t guarantee
admission, which is competitive.
Area A: Communication (9 credits)
- ENG 101 Composition I (C1 900) - with a grade of C or better
- ENG 102 Composition II (C1 901R) - with a grade of C or better
- COMM 101 Principles of Communication (C2 900)
Area B: Humanities and Fine Arts (9 credits)
Select three courses from the list for Area B with at least one course from humanities and one course from fine arts.
Area C: Mathematics (5 credits)
- MATH 171 Calculus with Analytic Geometry I (M1 900-1; MTH 901) *
Area D: Physical and Life Sciences (7-8 credits)
- PHYSI 210 University Physics I (P2 900L; PHY 911) recommended
- Select one life science course from the list for Area D.
Area E: Social and Behavioral Sciences (9 credits)
Select three courses in at least two different disciplines from the list for Area E.
