New Physical Therapist Assistant Program Beginning Fall 2021 [10/08/2020]
Prairie State College (PSC) announced a new Physical Therapist Assistant program set to begin fall 2021, pending achieving candidacy accreditation status with the Commission of Accreditation for Physical Therapy Education.
Offered through the Allied Health and Emergency Services Department, the new Associate of Applied Science (AAS) degree program will prepare students for a rewarding career as a physical therapist assistant (PTA).
PTA’s provide health care services to patients of all ages and health conditions in various settings, including outpatient facilities, hospitals, skilled nursing, extended care, home health, schools, hospice care, industrial/workplace environments, fitness centers, and sports training facilities.
Program coordinator Carol Fawcett, PTA, BS, MEd says the new degree empowers students to develop the entry-level skills required to practice as a PTA.
“The educational foundation will foster critical thinking, skill competence, ethical and moral practice, cultural competence, global societal responsibility, and life-long learning,” said Fawcett.
The PTA AAS is a selective admission program, and approximately 24 students will be admitted per cohort. Graduates of the program will be able to apply to take the National Physical Therapy Exam (NPTE) for licensure as a physical therapist assistant. To be admitted into the first cohort beginning in fall 2021, requirements and prerequisites must be completed by June 1, 2021. Those planning to enroll can take the required courses in spring 2021. Registration for the spring semester begins Oct. 19 for current students and Oct. 26 for new students.
To learn more about the program, the College is hosting a virtual information session on Oct. 29 at 2 p.m. Attendees will meet the Physical Therapist Assistant program faculty, learn about career opportunities, and get details on how to apply. Prairie State College is seeking accreditation of the new physical therapist assistant education program from CAPTE. The College is planning to submit an application for candidacy on Mar. 1, 2021. Submission of this document does not assure that the program will be granted Candidate for Accreditation status. Achievement of Candidate for Accreditation status is required prior to implementation of the professional/technical phase of the program; therefore, no students may be enrolled in professional/technical courses until Candidate for Accreditation status has been achieved. Further, though achievement of Candidate for Accreditation status signifies satisfactory progress toward accreditation, it does not assure that the program will be granted accreditation.
