General Math/Science A.S.
Prairie State College’s General Math/Science A.S. program offers a comprehensive curriculum that builds essential skills for success in STEM fields. Designed for students planning to transfer to four-year universities, this program also opens pathways to diverse careers in science, technology, engineering, and more.
What Can You Do with a Degree in General Math/Science?
With this degree, you can transfer to a four-year college or university to pursue
bachelor’s degrees in STEM fields, education, or health sciences. It also provides
foundational skills for careers in research, technical support, environmental science,
healthcare, and education. The program prepares you for further study and diverse
career opportunities that require strong analytical and scientific skills.
Graduates with an Associate in Science in General Math/Science are prepared to transfer
to bachelor’s programs in STEM disciplines, education, or health sciences. Career
opportunities include roles in research, technical support, education, environmental
science, and healthcare. As demand for STEM skills continues to grow across industries,
graduates are well-positioned for a wide range of rewarding career paths.
Suggested Curriculum
This curriculum has been designed for students who plan to transfer into a bachelor
of science degree program but are undecided about their specific major. It provides
the basic foundation in math, the sciences, and general education required by universities
for entry into math/science-related programs.
Area A: Communication (9 credits)
- ENG 101 Composition I (C1 900) - with a grade of C or better
- ENG 102 Composition II (C1 901R) - with a grade of C or better
- COMM 101 Principles of Communication (C2 900)
Area B: Humanities and Fine Arts (6 credits)
Select two courses from the list for Area B with one course from humanities and one course from fine arts.
Area C: Mathematics (5 credits)
- MATH 171 Calculus with Analytic Geometry I (M1 900-1; MTH 901)
Area D: Physical and Life Sciences (9 credits)
Select one life science course and one physical science course from the list for Area D. One course must have a lab component.
- BIOL 112 Organismal Biology (L1 910L; BIO 910)
- CHEM 110 General Chemistry I (P1 902L; CHM 911)
Area E: Social and Behavioral Sciences (6 credits)
Select two courses in two different disciplines from the list for Area E.
Select one MATH course and one ASTRO, BIOL, CHEM, ENGR, GEOG (not GEOG 101), GEOLO, METEO, PHYSC, or PHYSI course from the list for Courses Approved for Transfer to qualify for an A.S. degree. Each course must be 3 credits or more. The courses below are recommended to meet this requirement as they are typically taken by freshmen and sophomores at universities for a variety of math- and science-related majors..

- PHYSI 220 University Physics II (PHY 912)
