The main building is now open, and we are excited to return to our workspaces and begin transitioning to normal operations. Please note the following reminders:
M5 Entrance is Closed for Construction:
The M5 entrance and Welcome Center (located directly across from Parking Lot A) are currently under construction. Students and employees who park in Lot A should enter through doors M1 (facing Halsted) or M7 (facing the west side of Lot A). Renovations for the M5 entrance and Welcome Center will be completed this fall.
Welcome Center Temporary Location:
The Welcome Center (in charge of student and employee IDs) will remain in Conference Center Room #1315. Please direct individuals to this location. Last week, they temporarily relocated to ATOC 177 for a special event, but they will return to the Conference Center this week.
Offices of Military Student Affairs and Student Life Temporarily Virtual:
The Military Student Affairs and Student Life Offices will remain virtual as work continues on the floors outside their offices. We anticipate that they will reopen on Tuesday or Wednesday of this week. Students are advised to continue working with these offices virtually until then.
Temporary Restrictions on Moving Heavy Equipment:
Please be aware of the recently installed flooring and avoid using flatbeds, pallet jacks, carts, and other vehicles to transport heavy equipment this week.
New Furniture Coming Soon:
New furniture for the Atrium, Cafe, and Employee Lounge is scheduled for delivery in mid-September. Meanwhile, some of the furniture that had been temporarily relocated to other areas of the building will be returned to the atrium for students to use until the new furniture arrives.
Facilities and ITR Requests:
If you have not already done so, please ensure that all requests are submitted to facilitate the relocation of equipment back to the main building and to address any connectivity requirements.
Duplication:
The Duplication and Support Services team will fulfill EZPrint orders starting today. Requests will be processed in the order they are received in the system. Production equipment has been idle for over two months, and occasional jams are anticipated, so we ask for your patience. As always, end users should submit requests promptly or utilize walk-up devices throughout the main building.
Mailroom Services:
Complete mail services, including bulk mailings (more than 200 pieces), will resume today. Please check mailboxes for mail and packages not picked up prior to June 10.
Duplication and Mailroom hours are Monday through Friday from 7:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., with extended hours until 6:30 p.m. Monday through Thursday when classes are in session.
Loading Dock:
The Loading Dock will remain at the K Building until Monday, August 19.
Construction Continues:
Please adhere to the precaution signs and construction cones to keep you safe while construction work progresses in certain areas of the main building.
Continued Abatement Processes:
Abatement for the Tech Wing, Prairie Center, and basement is scheduled for the winter months. The floors in these areas have not been disturbed and are safe to enter.
Summer Hours:
As a reminder, summer hours ended on Friday, August 9. The college is back to its general hours of 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., Monday through Friday. If you have any questions, please contact your direct supervisor.
Please note that the main building was cleaned this week in preparation for our return.
PSC Community:
The abatement process to remove asbestos in the main building is progressing well. Work is completed in the atrium, and the flooring team has initiated preparations for the new tile installation.
The flooring in front of Pioneer Cafe, Barnes and Noble College Bookstore, and throughout the M5 entryway has been prepped, and the abatement process in these areas has begun.
The college will continue operating under temporary arrangements until it is safe to resume normal operations in the main building. For updates, please visit prairiestate.edu/facilities.
Your support, patience, and cooperation during this time are appreciated.
Prairie State College is currently open with modifications in place due to the closure of the main building, which was shut down temporarily due to the discovery of hazardous materials during the atrium renovation project. As a result, certain offices have been relocated or operating virtually to support students and the community while the main building is closed. Please take note of the following offices and services that have been impacted.
Bookstore:
The Barnes & Noble Bookstore will ship books from a remote location until the campus resumes normal operations. Instructions on how to order your textbooks can be found at https://prairie.bncollege.com/. If you have any questions, please email Brittany Zook at bzook@prairiestate.edu.
Library Services:
Librarians are available virtually to answer questions Mon-Thurs 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Students can contact a librarian at librarians@prairiestate.edu. Students can also go to our website to chat virtually with a librarian: library.prairiestate.edu. NOTE: these are live Prairie State College librarians and not bots. A separate email will be sent with more information about library services.
Relocated Offices:
The Fitness Center and the Christopher Art Gallery are closed. All other offices have been relocated or will operate virtually to continue serving students and employees while the main building is closed.
A representative from the above-mentioned offices will be available in person for general guidance and support.

Our contracted professionals conducted a test on a specific section of tile to assess potential contamination. The results indicated the presence of black mastic containing asbestos in that area. No other sections were disturbed, and we have taken measures to keep the remaining floor encapsulated until the building is vacated. We have contracted with a licensed remediation service to safely remove the hazardous materials.
During demolition, hazardous materials were discovered beneath some of the current tiles in the atrium and surrounding floors.
As a precautionary measure and to prioritize the well-being of our students, employees, and guests, the main building will be closed, and access will be restricted beginning June 6. Offices, classes, and labs within the main building will transition to virtual operations and/or be relocated to other campus facilities until the hazardous materials have been safely removed.
Unaffected buildings include the Conference Center, Adult Training and Outreach Center (ATOC), Health Tech Center (located off Vollmer Rd.), the Transportation, Distribution, and Logistics Building (197th and Halsted St.), and the Matteson Area Center (MAC) (4821 Southwick Dr., Matteson, IL).
Due to the ongoing atrium renovation project, the Welcome Center has temporarily relocated to the PSC Conference Center, room 1315. Students and employees may obtain new or replacement ID cards during operational business hours.
